I always hate it when I don’t follow my own advice. Today’s flub: Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.
XX was up late tonight, having had a bad dream, so I let her watch the last 10 minutes of Grey’s with me and snuggle. When it was over, we were just taking some good cuddle time, made some silly videos of us rolling our eyes in circles (because she was really concerned that she couldn’t watch herself do it in the mirror). After priceless moments, kisses, a song, and some chatter, this conversation occurred – and I walked right into it (in bold, in case you are slow.)
XX: (out of the blue) I really want to be a Mommy.
Me: (melting like butter) Awwww. You will be one day, when you are all grown up.
XX: But I REALLY want to be a Mommy.
Me: Do you think I really like being a Mommy?
XX: Yes
Me: I do. It is the best job in the world and I wouldn’t want to do anything else! (kiss)
XX: I love you.
Me: I love you, too. Why do you want to be a Mommy? (Actually only curious if she could articulate either her feelings or exactly what brought it all to mind… which, as you will see, she could.)

XX: Because I really want to play games on a phone!
Me: (crumble in self loathing)
Perhaps I should reconsider WHEN and HOW OFTEN I pick up my device… Eek.
